Host a tea party at your home or a picnic in the park. Expand your inner circle by inviting pleasure-positive friends and ask them to bring someone like-minded along. Enjoy meeting new people.

I was raised in a family that eats really fast, and when I was training myself to eat slowly, I made it a point to eat with friends who I noticed ate slowly. I chose to “belong” with people who believed in the value of eating slowly so that their behavior would rub off on me. This strategy is so effective because of mirror neurons, brain cells that mimic the feelings, actions, and sensations of others. Shawn Achor, author of the The Happiness Advantage, points out that mirror neurons explain how we pick up on all emotions, whether they are positive or negative. “Like secondhand smoke, the leakage of emotions can make a bystander an innocent casualty of someone else’s toxic state. This means that when we feel anxious or adopt an overtly negative mind-set, these feelings will start to seep into every interaction we have, whether we like it or not.”

The fastest way to adopt mind-sets and behaviors that will cause you to lose weight pleasurably is to join a community of women who are already embodying the principles of pleasurable weight loss. This means going to the places they go. Start hanging around women who enjoy their lives, are physically active, buy healthy foods, honor their sensuality, revel in their erotic nature, and deeply honor that they are feminine beings. If your current social circle does not include these types of women, then invest in attending the types of workshops, classes, and events where you will meet them, so that such friendships can be born.

PLEASURABLE EATING PRACTICE 6

Master the Art of Chewing

There is something very relaxing about thoroughly chewing your food, and it also helps you enjoy the whole spectrum of tastes and aromas that make up the meal. I’ve found that chewing makes food taste better and increases the pleasure of every bite. This is especially true when you are eating whole grains and vegetables, which become sweeter the more they are broken down in the mouth.

Chewing initiates the release of enzymes that allow your body to assimilate more nutrients from the food you eat, prevents gas and bloating, and makes digestion more efficient. You may find that when you chew your food more thoroughly your body begins to feel wonderfully light after eating. You’ll also be able to better identify the point at which a particular food no longer adds pleasure because you’ll be more present.

To master the art of chewing, follow these simple steps. First, place a bite of food in your mouth. Then put down your utensil. Start to chew, and as you do, continue breathing deeply. Close your eyes partly or fully, or focus your gaze on your meal or some other part of your environment that you find relaxing. Take small breaks throughout the meal to slow down the entire experience.
